The Nigerian Gemstone Initiative: Building a National Mineral Identity
How the Miss Universe Nigeria crowns became a symbol of a structured, localised value chain — and what it means for Nigeria's global mineral positioning.
FAR Horizon Minerals' "Nigeria-First" gemstone initiative demonstrates how mineral resources can be transformed into instruments of national identity, economic value, and global positioning. This was exemplified through the successful delivery of the Miss Universe Nigeria crowns (2023 & 2025), developed in partnership with Silverbird and Women in Mining members represented on FAR Horizon's board.
Designed by Kiki Chirori and crafted by Tejiri Omaloge of Tejiri Jewellery Company and AC&C Priceless lead, the crown was conceived as more than a ceremonial piece: it is a symbol of a structured, localised value chain in action. FAR Horizon played a central role in streamlining execution, coordinating Women in Mining leads, consultants, and technical contributors to ensure timely delivery and alignment across sourcing, design, and production.
Every element was sourced and produced within Nigeria — from the gemstones to the silver and the skilled artisans who brought the design to life. Inspired by traditional Nigerian motifs and Adinkra symbolism representing wisdom, courage, and resilience, the crown embodies cultural heritage translated into a high-value, globally visible product.
The selected gemstones reinforce this narrative. Citrine from Bauchi State, symbolising wisdom, creativity, and voice, and precious tourmaline from Oyo State, representing stability, humility, and kindness, were intentionally chosen to reflect the values of leadership and national identity.
This initiative underscores a critical shift: gemstones are not merely aesthetic assets, but strategic economic instruments. By integrating local processing, craftsmanship, and branding within a coordinated system, FAR Horizon demonstrates how national identity can be built into the value chain — enabling Nigeria to move from resource extraction to globally competitive, identity-driven industry.
